WW - Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer I, ref 1016, circa 1965, 36mm x 44mm to lug tips, 20mm lug width, original stainless steel screw back Oyster case, no strap, original gilt black dial which has turned an attractive tropical brown, 26J cal 1560, s#1279600, triple signed, inside back ref 1016, dated IV-65. Includes a service receipt and letter from Rolex of Switzerland to First Sargent Jimmie C. Bright as well as photograph of Jimmie; this likely means the watch was bought at a base exchange, a very common place to pick up a Rolex back in the 1960s.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic movement condition overall, hardly any oxide to steelwork, very light fine scratches to plates; excellent brown tropical dial with ample surface spotting; Mercedes hands with cracked original lume; polished case shows light wear, lug holes have been widened from many years of wear on most likely a Speidel Twist-O-Flex, this watch is a great candidate for a laser repair; Rolex signed crown Oyster shows hardly any wear, good threads; good plastic crystal; resealed for auction.
